OnBase: PDF documents fail to load in the Web Client after upgrading to version 25.1.3.1000 or higher

Description

After upgrading to OnBase 25.1.3.1000 or higher, PDFs Documents does not load in the OnBase Web Client. Instead, only the gray loading screen is displayed, and the thumbnail appears with a red X.

The following screenshot demonstrates the behavior:

Resolution

This issue occurs due to a security vulnerability with the Hyland Rendering and Conversion Service (HyRCS), which is a component of the OnBase Application Server used for rendering PDFs. A change was made to the OnBase Application Server to require .NET 8 to be installed alongside the existing requirement of the .NET Framework.

This change is important because it is the first time that the OnBase Application Server has a requirement of .NET. Note that the .NET Framework is not the same as .NET. Going forward, the OnBase Application Server will have both a .NET Framework version requirement and a .NET version requirement. This change is applicable to OnBase 25.1.3.1000 and higher, along with future version releases.

To resolve this issue, ensure that .NET 8 is installed on the machine running the OnBase Application Server. This is required to display PDFs within the OnBase Web Client. It is highly recommended in OnBase 25.1 environments to install .NET 8 on the OnBase Application Server (see the below section for more information). Follow best practices to ensure the .NET Framework and .NET 8 runtimes are regularly updated as Microsoft releases security patches.

Installing .NET 8

Unlike .NET Framework that is included with the Windows OS, .NET 8 is distributed separately and may need to be installed if it is not already present. .NET 8 can be installed via an installer, WinGet, or other application deployment mechanism. Refer to Download .NET 8.0 (Linux, macOS, and Windows).
